FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Brooklyn, NY – May 18,2025 – Independent candidate Nickie Kane announced today that several of her campaign posters were ripped down in an act of vandalism. In one instance, a poster for Zellnor “Bail Reform” Myrie was found in place of her own. While Nickie Kane’s poster was replaced, Nickie Kane opted to leave Myrie’s poster intact, explaining, “We’re not even running for the same position—and more importantly, he is no threat to my candidacy.”

This act of sabotage comes as no surprise to Nickie Kane, who has long accused the Brooklyn Democratic Party of resorting to underhanded tactics to suppress competition. The party, she argues, is so threatened by independent candidates that it will go to great lengths to prevent a fair race.

“Today’s incident is just one example of how the Brooklyn Democratic Party operates. Their candidates know they have nothing to offer the people and can only win if no one else is allowed to compete,” Nickie Kane said. “They target small and independent candidates like myself and use dirty tricks to try and push us out of the race. This is not about democracy—it’s about preserving their power.” Nickie Kane pointed to the actions of Brooklyn Democratic Party Chair Rodneyse Bichotte Hermelyn, who, according to The City, “admitted to forging signatures to challenge opponents’ petitions” (source). This admission, combined with the party’s track record of tearing down posters and sabotaging opponents, highlights the lengths to which the Democratic Party establishment will go to hold onto power.

The candidate also took aim at Zellnor Myrie, the state senator who co-authored the controversial 2019 New York bail reform law. Myrie, a vocal proponent of bail reform, has faced significant backlash for supporting legislation that critics argue lets “repeat offenders back out on bail” without sufficient consequences. Crime rates, especially gun violence, have surged in many parts of New York City, and Myrie’s support for this law is seen by many as contributing to that crisis.

Myrie and Public Advocate Jumaane Williams have faced growing criticism for their unwavering support of bail reform, even as violent crime continues to rise. According to Politico, Myrie and Williams have ignored the damage caused by their policies, with Williams even defending these controversial reforms as “a necessary step toward criminal justice reform” (source).

“Bail reform wasn’t real reform—it was reckless policy,” Nickie Kane stated. “We need smart reforms that keep repeat offenders off the streets and protect our communities. If you care about public safety, you should think twice before supporting Zellnor Myrie or Jumaane Williams.”
